Optical photomicrograph (OPM) shows cells at the equator of each microcarrier which are clearly visible while cells toward the poles show as clusters. The dark annulus is the region between the pole and the equator of each microcarrier.

Three modern, fully functional cell culture labs located at the SoloHill headquarters in Ann Arbor, Michigan are staffed by senior microbiologists and cell culture scientists. In these labs we (1) develop new types of Microcarriers, (2) conduct research and development of protocols for producing vaccines of commercial interest, (3) conduct cell studies for customers, and (4) perform contract research services.
Protocol development for customers has become an increasingly important part of SoloHill's business. The selection of optimal cell culture parameters is often counterintuitive. Therefore optimizing the conditions for each microcarrier application requires selection of media, sera, media supplements, specific microcarrier, bioreactor stir speed, cultivation temperature, virus infection protocol, harvest temperature and other variables. SoloHill is well suited to develop vaccine manufacturing protocols to meet customer requirements.
Upgrading older technology to newer "closed-system" bioreactors with SoloHill microcarriers is one growth area of our business. Changing from thousands of roller bottles or millions of chicken eggs to computer controlled bioreactors saves time, space, money, and improves quality and product consistency. It also requires a complete new process development starting with cell culture studies on microcarriers. SoloHill has received millions of dollars in funding from the NIH-SBIR (National Institutes of Health - Small Business Innovative Research) programs to develop new products and protocols for both the animal health and human health industries.
